Tax to Prevent Obesity

The campaign against pop consumption is a very effective advert as it is a video. It is effective by the use of graphics which provides the text and tells a person that by drinking one pop a day, every day, can add weight. Although they do not show that fat content that comes from low-fat milk, this will make you think that pop has more fat when you drink it. They allude that pop has more fat by showing the weight gain by throwing fat down on the screen. In the video by drinking a pop a day in one year, does make people feel disgusted as to how much fat they drink through this insinuation.

I do not think our nation is having an epidemic with obesity because at schools everyone has to exercise. The video brings me to feel that drinking pop once, everyday can make one put on a lot of weight and one should follow the recommendations such as drinking water and low fat milk, which we saw at the end of the advert where the person was smiling and looking healthier by drinking healthier options. The tax on pop will not occur in Canada because Canadians like drinking pop, but disbelieve the advert. This tax on pop is controversial for all Canadians, as I would still pay a large sum of money for pop or even chips, but then again, I only buy once in a while during the month.

Reality vs. Non-reality

My reaction to the picture of Ralph Lauren Blue Label starring model Filippa Hamilton and the picture of Jessica Simpson, is that I am shocked because I thought that these celebrities look the same in the magazine as in real life, but this is not the case, as the comparison between before and after through the usage of Photoshop on these celebrities. I find that the messages I see on the magazine covers convey to the public that this is the new trend to follow, as this would make one become just as popular as the celebrities in the magazines.

It does bother me that companies are constantly crossing the line with their photo manipulation in the appearances of the celebrities. It does affect boys' and girls' self esteems since the common trend through these adverts is perfect appearance, everyday in the media. This is a sad thing to happen but at least today we have part of the media trying to educate the public that they are not true role models, since the models are not exactly the same as their pictures in the magazines.

I think that having the trend of not using Photoshop manipulated pictures for magazines will exist in today's media, to make the public aware that businesses change the appearance of celebrities in pictures from reality to non-reality. These precautions will help remind people to think that they are beautiful in the natural sense.

My reaction to the magazine spread not glamoured up is that the media is doing the right thing to educate the public to be aware of the differences between the use and non-use of Photoshop manipulated pictures.

The Evolution of Games

I do not think that games have evolved enough to the point that they are beneficial to you, because every year game producers try to make games better than previous years that they make. I would say that games are detrimental to the person, if the person becomes glued to the game for too long when playing it. Playing too long, hence not eating can lead to malnutrition for the person and lack of sleep also changes the person's body clock. I would still say that these new game genres are still games because you are still using a control button pad to play the game and it involves a portable machine.

The exaggeration of the media

I feel that the Dove Campaign for real beauty is a good campaign to show the public to be aware of how the media bombards us everyday, portraying how women should look like. The Dove Campaign helps women to understand that they are naturally beautiful themselves. Since this is done, it brings women's self esteem up. Buying Dove products is a good choice for the public, because the public knows that the Dove Campaign is trying to educate women that they are naturally beautiful.

I find the Axe Effect Campaign is a funny advert because it portrays that when a man sprays Axe, any woman will go and run after the man(which we all know that does not really happen) which is how the advert is presented. I think that it is a very effective campaign because one remembers the product very well, and that is exactly what the advertisers want.

The parent company(Unilever) does not have to be responsible for ensuring the same values and beliefs to their children company, because if the parent company had to, the parent company would not have formed their children company so that they could sell different products as their parent company.

The Horrors of Smoking and Lard

While I was browsing through the advertisements I thought to myself that theses ads were not real because when reading the advert, they seemed to be a joke in what they portrayed. But when looking carefully at the pictures, they seemed to be real adverts used in the 50's and 60's to the public; e.g. They'Re Happy Because They Eat Lard which was issued by the Lard Information Council, which seemed surprising!

The other advert which is on smoking was with a man blowing smoke into a woman's face. This seemed to me that when a man blows smoke into a woman's face, the woman would be attracted to the man. This is shown by the woman looking interested at the man by smiling at him and the picture depicts the woman looking at the man's eyes, showing interest in what the man is doing. The smoking ads of today would usually tell a person of the negative effects of smoking.

Second Advertisement

The advert about Lard seems to me at that period of time, researchers thought that eating a tapeworm would help a person to become thinner as this would make this person be attractive. Although eating a tapeworm in the 50's and 60's seemed to be okay, but in present days, we know that eating a tapeworm will have devasting consequences to our body like malnutrition and brain damage. The advertisement today in the Weighless Books would show a person the proper way of how to lose weight by eating healthy and exercising regularly, and not eat a tapeworm which causes bad consequences.

These advertisments published in the 50's and 60's were inaccurate because researchers thought tapeworms were a helping tool to keep people thin but this not the case to modern research. With regards to smoking it is bad for a person's health as concluded by new research and that there is no quick solution to become thin or attract a person by smoking.

Embarrassed or Found

This is a picture of an embarrassing or found moment?

I have a question for Google, what do they mean by protecting other peoples’ privacy by just blurring peoples' faces and car licence plates? What do they mean by likeness in public domain?

Most people don't like having their faces or likeness of their faces exposed to millions of people especially on the internet where if someone decided to look up on the internet and found one at an intersection where one is not suppose to be at and so the person becomes embarrassed and exposed.

There are already crime ridden areas that have cameras and sometimes crime can be solved through these cameras, so Google would be helpful in this regard but I don't think Google cars would be at a scene of a crime while being committed. I think that this is just more advertising on Google's part to create an uproar because basically Google is for free.
